Lied to about your gender

I came across this story a few days ago and just felt compelled to write about it. Especially in light of what Texas is trying to do against those that are transgender. I also wanted to write about this because I noticed a lot of comments on this story saying that it validated anti-transgender ideals and I wanted to showcase that it does the opposite of that.

“Back in 1965, David Reimer was born along with his twin brother. At the age of 8 months, David and his brother each had a minor medical problem involving their penis, they both developed phimosis (painful urination due to obstruction of the outlet of the penis). The doctor recommended both boys be circumcised. Bruce was scheduled to go first. The regular surgeon had not performed it, an assistant took over it. Using an inappropriate method the assistant performed and the operation went wrong by burning off David’s entire penis. It was burnt so badly that it couldn’t be repaired surgically.

His parents were unsure what to do about their son’s prospects for future happiness and sexual function without a penis. They learned about a doctor in Baltimore who had gained a reputation for helping people of ambiguous gender. His name was Dr. John Money.
